A lineman was electrocuted to death on Saturday at Shakarpur village in Greater Noida’s Dankaur after he climbed an electric pole to carry out repairs, said police. His body, his family alleged, kept hanging on the overhead lines for at least one hour as “no one came for help”.
The lineman was identified as 40-year-old Sakawat Khan. The incident took place at around 2 pm. “An FIR has not been filed yet,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Kumar.
“The body has been sent for autopsy and the electricity department is talking to the family,” he further added.
“For one hour, the body was hanging onto the pole and nobody came to help,” alleged Sakawat’s brother Nazeem Khan. “Later, his son-in-law pulled the body down after which he was taken to the hospital,” Nazeem added. “We rushed to the GIMS Hospital in Kasganj but the doctor told us he was dead,” he further said.
“This is a very unfortunate incident,” said Rahul Sharma, Executive Engineer, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, Greater Noida. ” I have informed the headquarters and a compensation of Rs. 7.5 lakh will be given to the family on Monday, ” Sharma added.
He also said that while he was repairing the electricity cable, the sub-station operator turned on the power. “It is for the police to investigate as to what led to his death,” he said.
