With the monsoon settling in,its not just the water borne diseases, but more cases of eye infections that have hit hospital. Doctors say that infection, which usually starts surfacing in August-September,has hit the Capital early this year.
According to an additional professor of ophthalmology at AIIMS,We have started seeing 5 to 6 cases in our OPD daily. Though the virulence is moderate, there have been a couple of complicated cases with corneal involvement. Dr V K Monga, chairman of the Health Committee of the MCD says so far only viral conjunctivitis has been seen. With the temperatures dipping and the humidity levels rising earlier this year,it was expected that all infectious diseases would set in earlier than normal, he added.
Doctors have cautioned against the use of steroid eye drops and self treatment. Conjunctivitis can be either allergic or infectious. Steroids have to be used only for allergic cases, however, there are no symptoms for patients to distinguish between the two. We have had two cases of corneal involvement so far, from self medications. People should avoid self treatment since it leads to unnecessary complications, said Dr Tarun Kapur, senior eye specialist at Rockland Hospital. He added that popping antibiotics without guidance was also not advisable since the viral strain of the disease that has surfaced this year, would not be affected.
Dr Amit Khosla, senior consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said that this was the beginning of the annual phenomena. We have just started getting the cases, numbers will shoot up in the next 15 days.
