Making the best of his natural ability to pot balls,Lakshman Rawat of Delhi hit a massive break of 92 points in the final of the P Upendra Memorial North Zone Schools snooker tournament. In the process,he upset junior national champion Lalit Dahiya 2-1,pocketing his maiden snooker title. “I’m very happy to win this tournament. Last year,I was in Dahiya’s shoes, losing a tough final against him. But this time I was determined and it worked out well,” said Rawat, elated after his victory.

Both Dahiya and Rawat train under Mukesh Rehani, which Rawat feels helped him understand his opponent better. Rawat says that training with Dahiya has certainly helped him in evaluating his style of play and he worked on his weak areas prior to the big game.”I knew that he is a an overdrive player,so my strategy was just to play safe shots. His fouls paved an advantage for me and I am happy to convert all of them,” added Rawat.

Rawat, the current India No.6 in nine-ball pool, has recently returned after attending the national camp held at Bangalore,as he was one of the probables for the upcoming Asian games to be held in China. The duo rubbed shoulders with India’s best players and returned rich in experience.”We both played against the top ranked players in India and also managed to defeat them once. We learnt a lot from the senior players,” he said. The cueists will soon head back to Bangalore for the second camp scheduled to start from August 5.

Idolising world champion Geet Sethi, the youngster aims to follow his footsteps. The win has charged Rawat and he now dreams to deliver at the upcoming sub-junior and junior nationals scheduled for August. “After my successful run at this tournament,I want to win the junior titles at the nationals. So till then,my focus will be to improve my skills as there will be no room for errors,” said Rawat.

Coach Rehani fetl that although both his wards are talented, they have contrasting styles of play and have a long way to go before they reach their peak. Dahiya, according to Rehani,is more sound technically, while his Rawat is more flamboyant.
