For many fans,New York is no longer the salsa capital of the world. It is Colombia where the action now is. On Friday evening,Delhi got to feel the vibe of one of Colombia’s best-known salsa bands — La-33,which performed at the Maval-

ankar Auditorium for the Colombian embassy’s 200-year celebration of the country’s independence.

The band’s name was taken from a street called Calle 33 in Bogota where the group was formed 10 years ago. For 90 minutes on Friday, they sang of love, life and society, drawing from their own experiences so that the music—inspired from the salsa trends of the 1960s and 70s —spoke to everybody in the audience, even those who did not understand the Spanish lyrics. Some of the best numbers were La-33,Gozalo la tantera,Mambo and Roxanne . The 12 members also played instruments ranging from the piano and timbales to the saxophone and trombone. David Fernandez, who plays timbales, said he wasn’t surprised by the reaction. “Salsa is a type of music that never fails to move you,” he added.
