The Delhi Secretariat sprung into action on Wednesday with Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung taking back-to-back review meetings of the summer action plans of various departments and municipal corporations. It was the first time since 2001 that a Lt-Governor held a meeting at the Secretariat.

Refusing to speak on policy issues as the model code of conduct is in place, Jung said, “This meeting is to review the work done in the last two months with special emphasis on drawing up summer plans for water and power.”

On why he decided to hold the meeting at the Secretariat, he said, “There is no secret, no agenda here. I am a pure civil servant and my aim is to ensure clean governance till a government is formed. Nothing is hidden and all I want to ensure is that people’s complaints should not go unheard.”

Asked whether any decision has been taken on the Assembly election dates, Jung said in a lighter vein, “Yeh bahut bada raaz hai, abhi nahi bol sakta (This is a big secret and I can’t speak about it now).”

With the Lt-Governor having issued orders to officials to go on regular field visits, several departments made presentations on such visits. He directed the Power department to set up a control room and publicise the phone numbers of officials for redressal of public grievances. He also directed the department to deploy field staff to monitor theft and wastage.

“While we must ensure uninterrupted power supply to all, we must be particularly attentive to the poor since they are the most vulnerable, especially during peak summer months,” he said.

The Secretary (Power) sought police help for curbing theft and conducting raids and inspections. He said regular meetings were being held with discoms for ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

The commissioner of food and civil supplies, in his presentation, said the department had weeded out 21,000 bogus cards and special drives were being organised to enrol the homeless under the Food Security Act. The L-G was told that verification of cards would be completed by the end of July.

Jung directed municipal corporations to ensure proper toilet facilities in slums and resettlement colonies.

He said the city needs to gear up for the monsoon and the exercise of de-silting needs to be completed by mid-May.

Jung expressed concern over cleanliness and sanitation in schools, particularly of toilets. Voicing concern about girls’ toilets in schools, he said, “The doors of the toilets must have proper bolts and the toilets must be functional by the time schools reopen.”

He also called for close monitoring of mid-day meals served to children during the summer months and ensure highest standards of quality were met. He called for inspection of kitchens on a regular basis and installation of CCTV cameras there.
