Jersey is a Bailiwick, like Guernsey. These two island groups together make up what is called the Channel Islands. Jersey,Guernsey and the Isle of Man are the three British Crown Dependencies. This means Jersey is a possession of the United Kingdom; it is not a part of it. Jersey has an international identity separate from the United Kingdom, but the UK is constitutionally responsible for its defence. Despite the five sentences above — or precisely because of it — the Tourism Department’s website cuts to the point: “Jersey is an island of opposites,a small island with a big personality”. Only if it were that easy to describe the place.

Jersey,14 miles off the coast of France and 100 miles off mainland UK,is the only permanently inhabited island of the Bailiwick. Thanks to its status as an international financial services centre (47 different banks have branches on the island) — and a famous breed of cows named after it — the per capita GDP of Jersey is $57,000,which is the sixth highest in the world. India, with $3,100,is at 163. Speaking of India, the Bank of India has a Jersey branch.

Jersey was one of the 30 participants in the 1958 British Empire & Commonwealth Games and has participated in every Games since. They have won one gold and three bronze.
