Transport officials have discovered that the chartered bus, which was involved in an accident that claimed three lives while plying between Modinagar and Noida on Monday morning, did not have the required permit to operate on the route. The bus was only permitted to ply between Govindpuri and Kalindi Kunj, they said.
The chartered bus (UP14BT5236) had run over three persons at the Meerut crossing while competing with another vehicle. Stating that the driver was allowed to run commercially only through Modinagar,Alt Centre,Old Bus Depot,Chowdhary Mor and Vijaynagar crossing,a transport official said that the accident occurred at the Meerut crossing, which was not on the route.
Private buses regularly flout rules and guidelines,RTO Lalji Chaudhary said, adding that the ones responsible for Mondays accident would be punished. The bus, which killed three persons yesterday, did not having the required permit to ply on the route. Drivers regularly compete on roads, putting the lives of passengers and pedestrians in danger, the officer said.
The officer also said that buses plying in no-permit zones would be impounded and their permits cancelled. The bus driver or owner will have to pay Rs 10,000 for putting people at risk. We have cancelled the permits of many private buses for this reason in the past, but they have always returned. The traffic police should cooperate with us. We will launch an inquiry into Mondays accident, he added.
Private bus operators also allegedly flout speed limits on roads in an effort to get more passengers. Many are found plying illegally between Meerut,Bulandshahr,Modinagar,Muzaffarnagar and Hapur. They either encroach on other routes or drive recklessly for more passengers, a senior traffic police officer said.
