The police on Saturday claimed to have arrested the kingpin of a kidney and blood racket operating in private hospitals in Delhi and NCR.
The accused,Vinod Kumar (32),reportedly involved in more than 25 kidney transplants in different hospitals,collected huge amounts of money from needy persons.
Officials said that Kumar got labourers and rag-pickers to sell him their kidneys for Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. His racket spread across Delhi,NCR,and Punjab.
Officials suspect some private hospitals and doctors working there could be involved. We are looking for them; we have Kumars custody for a day and will question him, an officer said.
The officer said Kumar was earlier arrested in 2006 and booked under Transplantation of Human Organs Act at the Mandir Marg police station.
A case has been registered against him at Sarojini Nagar police station. Kumar has reportedly told the police that he had arranged for as many as 25 cases of kidney transplantation between 2000 and 2004.
