A 10-member contingent comprising of both male and female judokas will represent India at the World Cadet Championships to be held in Budapest,Hungary, from August 6 to 10. While the Judo Federation of India (JFI) is yet to finalise the team,a decision is expected to be made next week, according to its secretary-general Mukesh Kumar.
The senior mens team is training in Bangalore while the juniors are in Mumbai. As for the women probables, they are in Bhopal. The selection committee will meet next week before deciding on the team members to travel to Budapest, Kumar said.
The world cadet event is being held for the first time and Kumar says that the Indian judokas stand a good chance.
Since it is a first-time event, there are chances of our judokas doing well. We can hope for at least three medals in lesser weight categories.
The JFI will also send a team to Bangkok to compete in the Asian Martial Arts events, which is being held for the first time. The federations main concern will be the World Championships for the seniors in Rotterdam, the Netherlands,in August.
India has never won a medal in a world meet and the JFI is not willing to bet on it this time either.
But we would certainly hope to finish among the top five. If we can achieve that,it will be a bonus, said Kumar.
Kumar also said that the federation was planning to host the Rajiv Gandhi International Judo Championships in February in Jaipur, though that exact dates were yet to be finalised.
