The last two weeks of the ITF $10,000 Futures tournaments in New Delhi havent been the most memorable for Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. The University of Washington student, who has looked sharp in the matches he has managed to complete, had to leave unfinished business behind as he was forced off the court due to injury and cramps, but in this weeks opener,he already managed a big win in his name.
Jeevan faced a tough contest against Dutch seventh seed Peter Lucassen on Tuesday, who was one of the beneficiaries two week ago when the 22-year-old retired from their match. But there was to be no repeat of that result this time around, the score instead reading 7-5 7-6 (2) in favour of the Indian. In the second round,Jeevan will play Malaysian qualifier Yew-Ming Si,who beat American Shane La Porte 7-5 6-1.
Sixth seed Rohan Gajjar had a comfortable time in the first set against Abhijeet Tiwari, whacking off powerful groundstrokes and serves to give his opponent no chance. He took that 6-1,but ran into a spot of trouble early in the second. Tiwari, who had previously been going for too much on his shots in desperation of a few winners, finally got his act together and sent down a few unplayable groundstrokes of his own. He smashed off a backhand down the line to hold his serve in the first game, and pulled off some passing shots in the next game as he got the break he was looking for. After he held his serve, the score was 3-0,and when Gajjar called for medical attention, the second set looked like it would go Tiwaris way. But errors from the qualifier in the fifth game gave the break back ,and he would win just a game more as the sixth seed wrapped up a 6-1 6-4 win.
Top seed Vishnu Vardhan pulled out of his match due to illness, and was replaced by Fariz Mohammed. The lucky loser, though, didnt last in the tournament for more than three sets as he went down to Karunuday Singh 6-1 4-6 6-3.
