Jamia suspends assistant professor booked for rape of colleague: ‘justice will be served’
Jamia Millia Islamia said the rape accused was a contractual employee, and not a permanent faculty.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in Delhi suspended an assistant professor Wednesday after he was arrested on the charge of allegedly raping a colleague on the pretext of marrying her.
In her complaint with the Delhi Police, the lecturer said that the incident occurred in June last year at Maharani Bagh, two months after they met at the university. The police said that after they met in April last year, the accused reportedly initiated contact through LinkedIn and proposed a relationship within two weeks.
According to police sources, he made physical advances under the pretext of marriage, and their families discussed marriage arrangements. However, in October, the talks fell apart due to the accused citing unmatched horoscopes and the victim’s father disapproving of the marriage.
The police filed a case under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and took the accused in custody with the investigations underway.
Jamia Milia Islamia responded Wednesday as it terminated his services, stressing its zero-tolerance policy in cases of violence against women. “… it is clarified that the incident of sexual assault happened outside the university and is totally individual and personal. Therefore, JMI does not have anything to do with the alleged incident as it did not happen on the university campus.”
The administration also noted that the accused was a contractual employee, and not a permanent faculty.
To combat sexual harassment incidents, it reiterated the role of its Internal Complaints Committee and regular gender sensitisation initiatives.
“…Nonetheless, the university administration, conveying its severe denouncement of the grave crime placed him under termination, stating that any assault on the honor, dignity and rights of women will not be tolerated by JMI and that the university is sure that justice will be served as law will take its own course,” read the statement.
