The proposal to make the busy ITO intersection signal-free with three new clover-leaf flyovers was approved on Thursday, paving the way for the PWD to begin the ground-work for the project in the coming days.

Officials said the PWD would soon outsource work such as studying the traffic flow, soil test and topographical survey to private companies.

“Before implementing it,we need to carry out studies to assess the viability of the project. A simulation study will be carried out to understand the volume and impact of the project on the traffic flow. Several other studies will be needed before starting work,” an official said.

He said the idea was to build small,clover-leaf flyovers so that big flyovers could be avoided to make ITO a signal-free corridor.

According to the plan, there will be one-way traffic movement on Vikas Marg and the road will have four lanes for traffic moving towards East Delhi and Noida.

For traffic from East Delhi to ITO,the plan suggests constructing three clover-leaf flyovers — one to connect Vikas Marg near Tilak Marg, the second connecting Tilak Marg with Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg and the third to link Kotla Marg with Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.

“We will ensure minimum disruption of traffic. The clover-leaf flyovers will be built on stilts or RCC pillars so that traffic flow can continue smoothly,” the official said.

The first clover-leaf flyover —connecting Vikas Marg with Tilak Marg — will be built after covering a drain behind Vikas Bhawan. “Only one-way traffic will be allowed from Tilak Marg towards DDU Marg,” the official said.
