Delhi CM and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal. (X/@ArvindKejriwal) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday hit out at the Centre amid a row over an alleged move to rename ‘India’ as ‘Bharat’, saying that changing the name of the country was “not a joke”.
“Just because some parties came together and formed an alliance and named it INDIA, you want to rename the country? Let’s say if the INDIA alliance holds a meeting and decides to rename it to ‘Bharat’… will they change the name again? Will they then name Bharat BJP? The country belongs to 140 crore people, this is not a joke,” Kejriwal said. “This is our country… It is thousands of years old and has a rich history, culture and tradition and you just want to rename it because the alliance has named itself INDIA,” he added.
The Aam Aadmi Party is also part of the INDIA alliance.
Kejriwal was addressing a press conference after the inauguration of 400 new e-buses alongside Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena. His remarks came on a day when invitations for a dinner to be hosted by President Droupadi Murmu on September 9 for world leaders during the upcoming G20 Summit were sent out in the name of the ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the customary ‘President of India’.
Kejriwal said he had not received any official information about the change. “I have not read or received any official information but heard from here and there that BJP wants to rename India as Bharat. The country is of 140 crore people, it does not belong to any one party,” Kejriwal said.
“You fear you will lose a few seats (in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls) because of the formation of the alliance, so you change the name of the country. This is a betrayal,” Kejriwal said.
Accusing the BJP of diversionary tactics, he added, “The day that the INDIA alliance was announced, they spread the news that they want to implement ‘One nation, one election’. What is the benefit of this? Will your family benefit, will you get a job, will inflation come down? What are its benefits? What happens now is that they have to forcefully step out and go on the ground and do some work for the people once in six months for votes.”
If ‘One nation, one election’ is implemented, BJP leaders will not be seen anywhere even once a year, he alleged. “They will tour the world for five years and the price of LPG cylinders will go up to Rs 5,000. They will then reduce it by Rs 200 and say we have given you a subsidy,” he added.
