For the first time, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has introduced new worksheets in its schools, under its Foundational Literacy Numeracy (FLN) programme for classes 1 to 5. The implementation of the worksheets, which include writing and understanding assessments, started on April 1 this year.

These worksheets are used for the assessment of students in four subjects — English, Maths, Hindi and Urdu — every 15 days.

“Earlier, we used the ASER tool to assess children in MCD schools, but this year we will use our own assessment tool to identify which level a student belongs to between Level 1and 5,” said MCD mentor and coordinator Kumar Akhilesh.

“Keeping in mind the Nipun Bharat and NEP 2020’s aim to make sure that every child up to class 3 must have the ability to read, write and understand, we designed the FLN curriculum, which we will be using for students in classes 1-5,” Akhilesh added. Under the FLN, students between classes 1-5 are given different worksheets based on which their level of learning, reading, writing and understanding would be decided.

He further stated that at a primary level, the civic body intend to curb spelling mistakes often made by students, which is why it has planned to introduce the worksheets in classes 1 and 2 as well.

In each class, students are divided into five levels based on their learning abilities. Level 1 (Beginner) is for familiarising students with letters and numbers. Level 2 aims at identifying and writing characters and digits from 0 to 9. Level 3 is for identifying, reading, and writing words and numbers from 10 to 99; Level 4 is for reading paragraphs and subtraction, and Level 5 targets reading, writing and understanding a story and division.

The Level 1 worksheets for classes 1 and 2 include pre-number concepts, understanding straight and curved lines, and introduction to letters. Whereas the Level 1 worksheets for students of classes 3-5 include concepts such as picture identification.
