Hours later, students work on election plans

After the Supreme Court vacated the stay on JNU students’ union elections on Thursday, all parties concerned came together to decide the future course of action.

After the Supreme Court vacated the stay on JNU students’ union elections on Thursday, all parties concerned came together to decide the future course of action. A statement by the Joint Struggle Committee said a meeting of the university general body will be held in January.

On the age criteria for candidates,Ph D student Praveen said since most students in JNU are research scholars and many courses begin at M Phil or Ph D level, many students are in the 25 to 30 age group.

On the waiver of the mandatory 75 per cent attendance criteria for contesting elections, former JNUSU president Sandeep said,“There is no concept of attendance in JNU.”

Reacting to the court verdict,JNU Vice-Chancellor S K Sopory said,“I’m happy that elections have been reinstated. From now on,we will leave it to the students to decide.”

The court did not accept the suggestions made for allowing students to contest twice for posts of office-bearers.

Sucheta De,National Joint Secretary of All India Students’ Association, said,“This is an extraordinary situation as the academic year usually begins around August and the judgment has come at a time when the campus is on vacation and we will not be able to reach any conclusion till we have a university general body meeting in January.”

Most parties see this as an “interim arrangement”,and not a “final settlement”,maintaining that the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines are “an aberration of campus democracy”.
