There’s something about the mercury that charges up the city’s theatre people. Even as the sun blazes outside, the cool halls of auditoriums come alive with an array of theatre festivals, from the National School of Drama’s Summer Theatre Festival 2009 to the Three Arts Club’s anniversary show.

“It’s that time of the year when schools and colleges are shut and now, with the election excitement behind us,audiences are more likely to take in a theatre show or two,” says Arvind Gaur, who has been conducting the Asmita Theatre Festival since 1994. The festival will be held from May 23 to July 5 and feature the best plays from Asmita’s repertoire — Court Martial,a socioeconomic play about a man from a low caste family,to Operation Three Star,a political satire adapted from Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist. The plays will be staged at

India Habitat Centre and Gaur says “the entry rates have deliberately been kept at a paltry Rs 50 to

attract the younger crowd.”

The Three Arts Club, which made a comeback in 2008 after a period of 25 years, will premier its play Mundan today at the Shri Ram Centre as part of its ongoing festival. “We are known for our comic plays,so Mundan is an effort at tackling a more serious subject,” says Anuradha Dar of the company. “The play deals with a protagonist who is infected with HIV while getting his head shaved.” The story, she adds, focuses on social prejudices and suspicions but ends on a positive note.

Pierrot’s Troupe, which has been hosting a festival for the past six years, will re-launch an old play Rahe Naam Pakistan Ka with a new name,Ghazanfar Hussein — 1923 – 1947????. “We’ve also roped in Bollywood actor Saleem Shah,a veteran of films like Sarfarosh,Fanna,Mammo and English August among others, for this play. A solo act,the monologue presents Partition from the perspective of a man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He has lost the sense of time and space and his rambling talk casts an ironic light on current politics,” explains director M Sayeed Alam. The other plays on their list are Big B,an adaptation of Munshi Premchand’s Bade Bhai Saheb, and hit comedies Cut,Cut,Cut and A Private Affair. The festival will be held from June 6 to July 5.

But,arguably the oldest summer theatre festival in Delhi is by the NSD’s Repertory Company. From May 21 to June 17,the group will present 10 plays like Ghasiram Kotwal,Uttaramcharit,Kafka – Ek Adhyay to Ram Ram Satya Hai and Istanbul. “So,if you missed any of these productions throughout the year, here’s your chance to update yourself,” says an NSD official. The plays will be held at Kamani Auditorium,Shri Ram Centre,Abhimanch and Sammukh.
