Govt to set up squad to track missing children

The Delhi government on Wednesday told the High Court of its decision to set up a Missing Persons Squad (MPS) in the police department to track down children and rehabilitate them.

Standing Counsel (Criminal) Pawan Sharma apprised Justice Sanjiv Khanna of the government’s decision to set up an MPS under the Crime Branch of the city police while submitting the details of its standard procedural steps to be followed by it after the receipt of a complaint about a missing child.

The government submitted its Standard Operating Procedure to the court in response to its direction to ensure that the parents of the missing children do not have to run from pillar to post for the purpose.

The court had sought the government’s response,taking suo motu note of media reports which stated that though a large number of children go missing from the Capital every day,very few are traced by the police.

Submitting the government’s 14-page Standard Operating Procedure,Sharma said it was framed with the objective of minimising distress and ensuring high-quality service for the families of missing children.

Sharma said the MPS will function under the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police.
