Garbage heaps in Gurgaon, civic agency still looking for solutions

Next to the entry point for DLF Phase II,on Sikandarpur side,in Gurgaon is a huge pile of garbage.

Next to the entry point for DLF Phase II,on Sikandarpur side,in Gurgaon is a huge pile of garbage. The waste has been there long enough for passers-by to consider it as part of the landscape. This,as the officials of Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon continue to chalk out elaborate schemes for efficient garbage disposal in the Millennium City.

The DLF Phase II entry is not an isolated case, almost all areas in Gurgaon are dotted with heaps of garbage due to absence of a proper disposal mechanism.

The Delhi-Mehrauli road, address for upscale malls and residential apartments,is no different a sight,as many garbage heaps take up the roadside. Adding to the problem is the ever increasing number of food stalls on the footpaths. The waste from these eateries usually piles up next to the stalls.

An empty plot next to the city court building has been turned into a dumping ground.

“Most of the garbage is thrown by residents who drive to the spot with trash in their cars dump the waste and then go away,” said a paanwala who has a stall on the pavement near the DLF Phase II entrance.

In Sector 14,carcass of dead animals are part of the road-side garbage.

Further ahead in Palam Vihar,a children’s park is no more a playing area as it has been turned into a dump yard. This area near Palam Mor was meant to be a green zone.

“No one listens despite many requests. Some residents had also tried to stop it,but the contractor who collects the garbage from other areas invariably dumps it here (the park),” a resident said.

The garbage truck operated by the MCG regularly dump garbage in empty plots, said residents. Waste can be seen in empty plots in sectors 48,56 and 57 on the Sohna road.

“I have been taking up this issue for a long time in my ward, but nothing seems to be going right. Garbage is seen piled up everywhere. Proper mechanism needs to be set up to get rid of this problem,” said councillor Nisha Singh.

The Banwari-based garbage treatment plant, with a capacity of 600 tonnes per day,is running at full capacity, according to MCG officials. More than 100 trucks bring in garbage to the plant and out of the 600 tonnes of garbage that is treated, around 500 tonnes is from Gurgaon, officials said.

According to MCG spokesperson Sanjay Chugh, garbage removal is done on a day-to-day basis. “If garbage is not removed, people register their complaints at our call centre. We then call up the agency involved in that area and ask them to remove the garbage.”

He added that after they agency completes the garbage collection they have been instructed to take a picture of the area.

“Then we get back to the complainant saying the clean up has been done,” said Chugh.
