Froth of the Nibelung

7 Degree Brauhaus claims to be the country’s first authentic Bavarian beer garden.

As the city resembles the interior of a furnace, and its citizens abandon it like so many rodents from a burning building, they would be well advised to make a pit stop on the scorching vista that is the Golf Course Road in Gurgaon. We enter the South Point Mall and ascend its escalator to 7 Degrees Brauhaus, before finally entering its oasis-like coolness. Self-comparisons to Sigfried, triumphantly slaying the dragon Fafner, must be forgiven.

The interiors are cleverly done like an exterior,a veritable garden of the brews,if not gods. There are trees growing out of barrels, low circular tables with comfortable couches, illuminated with hanging copper lamps, arranged on a cool marble floor. The landscape of the restaurant however is dominated by gigantic vats behind the bar counter, with all manner of pipes and tubes protruding from them,a not so subtle promise of the effervescent liquid the restaurant purveys.

While there are no Bavarian maids in form-fitting lederhosen with skin the colour of alpine milk dispensing foaming tankards of wheat beer, the service staff is friendly and more than happy to point your mug in the right direction. Presently the bier-garten offers four varieties of brewed beer a la Bavaria: Lager,Wheat,Special and Master’s Brew, which are available in serving sizes of half, one and one and a half litres. You are welcome to sample the wares in shot glasses before making your selection, which we did extensively, before picking Lager, like good little Indians raised on Kingfisher. Unadventurous? Probably, but after braving the elements outside we had had our fill of the unknown, thank you very much. Now it was time to fill ourselves with lager and, what else in a beer garden, sausages.

Thanks to the calescent weather outside,it was our thirst that demanded slaking rather than our appetite and we picked sausages (specifically the Krakauer, which is originally from Poland and a blend of beef and pork) despite the menu having an extensive selection of German fare. Think meats and potatoes in myriad forms, with some pretzels and sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) thrown in for good measure. Apart from German food, the only other cuisine is a medley of Indian food and of course pasta, which is now seemingly an indelible part of Indian cuisine.

Soon enough, like Brünnhilde with her horn, our server arrives bearing forth a flagon (or whatever its metric conversion is) of beer the colour of pale honey, frothy as the sea,and a platter of steaming sausages, whose nearing proximity rouses our appetite from its summer hibernation. As we sip and then gradually quaff mouthfuls of crisp golden Lager, interspersed with bites of sausages, crisp from the outside, juicy and redolent with the flavour of meat and spices, music starts playing in our head. Unsurprisingly,it’s Wagner. We can’t wait to return and finish the rest of the opera.
