Delhi University Students’ Union president Satender Awana Monday rubbished talk that he had been named in an FIR relating to dowry, molestation and attempt to murder. The name Satender Awana was among eight persons a woman gave in her complaint at Noida Sector 20 police station Saturday.
According to the police, while a Satender Awana has been named in the FIR as the woman’s elder brother-in-law, investigations show that her claim is false. “Her husband has just one other brother who is Nakul Awana and he has been named in the FIR,” said a senior police officer. The ABVP leader also said he was not related to the accused.
The woman’s complaint named her husband Mohit Awana, father-in-law Asharam Awana, mother-in-law Baleshari, brothers-in-law Nakul Awana and Satender Awana as well as three sisters-in-law, Ritu Awana, Nitu Awana and Rishi Awana.
The Noida police officer said there were apparently differences between woman and her husband for the last few months. “They got married in May last year. Several meetings for reconciliation took place at a community centre. The woman alleged her husband was not medically fit, so she did not want to reconcile with him. Her husband and his family did not want a separation and took the matter to court. At the same time, more meetings were held where they reached a financial settlement,” said the officer.
Her husband and his family allegedly did not give the entire amount (agreed upon). The woman then went to her in-laws’ house with her brothers. She accused her in-laws of misbehaving with her. Both sides called people and there was a scuffle. Following this, the woman registered a complaint and a counter complaint was filed by her mother-in-law,” added the officer.
