With financial clearance granted on Tuesday, the decks have been cleared for construction of the proposed flyover parallel to the existing single-carriageway Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover. The project is now awaiting only Cabinet clearance.
A Cabinet meeting, chaired by CM Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday, could not clear the project as financial clearance came only after the meeting. But the government is hopeful to clear it in the next Cabinet before the model code of conduct for the assembly polls comes into force.
The Congress-led state government is pushing for the project so that work can begin before the Assembly elections. We have been striving hard to implement this project. Only Cabinet clearance is required for work to begin on the ground, PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said.
After Cabinet approval, the Public Works Department will float tenders for the project expected to cost Rs 140 crore.
The Delhi Urban Art Commission cleared the controversial project on August 27. The Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover, which serves as a key link to the airport and NH-8,has been the subject of considerable debate and the reason for a traffic nightmare ever since a handful of Palam Marg residents, whose bungalows face the road, opposed the takeover of a service lane outside their houses for the flyover project. The flyover was reduced to a single carriageway, resulting in a traffic bottleneck and daily chaos.
