Fencing may be an Olympic sport in fact, one of the very few games to have been part of every Olympics since the first modern Games began in 1896 but it remains a vague concept of people in full body suits and protective masks in India. Not too many know of it as a sport; neither is too much information available about the sport or fencers in the country.
On Tuesday, the Fencing Association of India (FAI) launched its website to provide information on the sport. FAI president Durga Das Boro assured that the website would be updated regularly unlike several other associations and will post its national and international calendar of events soon.
He also stressed the importance of upgrading the sport to make it come out of the small pockets of the country.
In the last 20 years, the overall progress has been slow but most of it has happened since 2005. We have participated in more international events than most countries. At the Bangkok international fencing championships in 2007,India won two gold,a silver and a bronze, but the government still downgraded the sport in the priority list. We will request the sports minister for an immediate upgradation soon.
Calender of events
The FAI also released the national and international calendars of events for senior, youth, cadet and junior categories. The senior team will participate in the World Championship from September 30-October 8 in Antalya,Turkey, followed by the Asian Fencing Championship in Doha,Qatar from November 13-19. In 2010,the youth team will compete in the Youth Olympic Games from August 14-26.
Inaugurating the website,Indian Olympic Association secretary general Randhir Singh said that the website would contain all information regarding Fencing from its history as a sport to profiles of Indian players and office-bearers,national and international results, latest photographs of various competitions held in India and abroad and even rules and regulations about fencing.
