The Ghaziabad police are facing a peculiar situation where they are unable to trace the family of an alleged fake encounter victim.

The Ghaziabad police are facing a peculiar situation where they are unable to trace the family of an alleged fake encounter victim so they can deliver two compensation cheques amounting to Rs 5 lakh.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had ordered that the amount be paid to the family as compensation for an alleged fake encounter.

SSP (Ghaziabad) Raghubir Lal confirmed that the police have been unable to trace the family of Ravi Kumar alias Raj Kumar, who was allegedly killed by the Indirapuram police on May 1,2004. Kumar was wanted in 10 cases of looting, dacoity and snatching.

After the incident, the victim’s family had approached the NHRC,claiming that he had been killed in a fake encounter. An inquiry revealed several irregularities in the police version of the encounter, and the commission ordered that compensation money be paid to the victim’s family. Subsequently, two cheques were issued in the names of Kumar’s brothers,Ashok and Sachin.

Though Kumar and his family were residents of Daurala village in Bulandshahr district, they had later migrated to Ghaziabad. Following this, the Bulandshahr District Magistrate sent the cheques to the Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police.
