The Delhi Traffic Police has identified 445 waterlogging hotspots across the city, in view of the monsoon season, officials said on Tuesday. This list of hotspots has been shared with civic agencies to ensure that timely preventive measures are taken to avoid flooding this year, they added.

Officials said that of the 445 areas identified, while six each fall under Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council), the remaining are under Public Works Department (PWD). Last year, around 300 locations prone to waterlogging were identified, they added.

“PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh has issued strict directions to officials to ensure timely desilting in order to prevent waterlogging this monsoon. Strict directions have been issued to increase the capacity of pumps and redevelop drains at all such areas,” said an official.

“PWD has already started desilting work in several divisions… and the first phase of desilting will be completed by May. Also, the department has issued standard operating procedure on how to prevent waterlogging in underpasses and subways, as well as on installing alarms or timers in pump houses to alert the staff when the water level increases,” the official added.

Besides, the government is set to purchase around 25 super sucker machines – used to remove water from roads – to prevent waterlogging in the city, officials said. They added that a team will be set up to ensure regular maintenance of water pumps.

“There are 128 permanent pump houses and 538 permanent pumps under PWD… Among these, 439 are in good working condition,” said an official.

Delhi has 15-odd areas that are prone to waterlogging, including Zakhira flyover, Minto Road bridge, Prahladpur pul, Sarita Vihar underpass, Jahangirpuri Metro station, Loni Road crossing, and Azadpur market underpass, among others.
