Exorbitant fees, unregulated hikes: Audit results of 9 Gurgaon schools likely this week

More than 1,000 parents had approached the committee, headed by divisional commissioner D Suresh, against these schools in May.

Findings of an audit of nine private schools in Gurgaon ordered by the Fees and Fund Regulatory Committee following complaints of exorbitant fees and unregulated fee hikes are expected by November 5, said sources Monday.

The committee had, in August, given a CA firm 90 days for the task and later granted an extension, which expires this week, added the sources. More than 1,000 parents had approached the committee, headed by divisional commissioner D Suresh, against these schools in May. A parents’ group had submitted to the committee a 24-point list of queries, which they felt the schools should answer during the audit of their accounts.

“According to the parents, the schools are overcharging them in the name of ‘additional facilities’, whereas they are only allowed to charge education fee under Section 198 of the Haryana State Education Rules. We also got complaints that the schools are charging capitation fee, which is prohibited,” said an education department official.

The schools maintain they send details of expenses to the government every year. “The increase in fees is not wrong because private schools cannot depend on subsidies or trustees, like government schools,” said the principal of one the schools under audit gaze. “The increase in fees is not as much as some parents are saying… We have increased fees by 5 to 10 per cent.”
