Ex-Armymen hired to read water meters

According to sources,the Delhi Subordinate Service Selection Board has not carried out any new recruitment in the past few years,something that has left the Delhi Jal Board incapable of filling its vacant positions.

Goyal said the water utility has already issued letters of appointment to at least 300 candidates,of which at least 50 have already reported for work.

“Many ex-servicemen have also denied appointment since it is contractual and not permanent. We are hopeful that at least more than 100 appointments could be filled this way,” Goyal said.

He said the decision was made keeping in mind numerous consumer complaints with regard to manipulation by meter readers.

“The ex-servicemen would inculcate discipline in the job. The task is to read meters and does not require any greater skills. Discipline and some basic knowledge is the only requirement. The ex-servicemen are used to discipline,versed in computer use,and following rules ,” said a senior official.

Taking note of consumer complaints related to meter reading and going a step further,the Delhi Jal Board has also decided to carry out the meter reading on Sundays for the convenience of the people.
