e-ticketing (electronic ticketing machine) project gets delayed

Revenue sharing issues with DIMTS prompts Transport dept to look for new partners.

The ambitious electronic ticketing machine (ETM) project of the Delhi government, which involves installion of these machines in DTC buses is likely to be delayed further.

The project was to be implemented by Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) by early-2011,but issues over revenue sharing has now prompted the Transport department to seek the expertise of other companies for implementing the project, said officials.

In order to revive the project, the government is now planning to seek the expertise of UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL).

“We have asked UTIITSL to submit their proposal for implementing the electronic ticketing machine project as we want to see if they can offer better rates than those offered by DIMTS. Once the system is in place,an automated fare collection system (AFCS) can be introduced across all modes of transport like Metro, cabs, autorickshaws, etc. You will be able to pay for all modes of transport using a single card,’’ said a senior Transport official.

Once installed, the ETMs will help bring down operational costs of DTC and will also help plug holes in revenue collection.

The machines will ensure that the fare for every ticket sold is accounted for, which,at present,is being carried out manually.

“The ETMs are a step towards the automated fare collection system, which is being planned. A minor software modification will ensure that it is integrated with other automated fare collection systems,’’ said the official.

This national common mobility card (NCMC),named ‘More’,was unveiled by Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath recently and the Delhi project will be part of the national project.

“This card will eventually be used for paying parking and toll as well. It will increase the popularity and acceptability of public transport systems across the country and make them more appealing to the end user,” said an official.

UTIITSL has also been appointed as the technology partner for the project by the UD Ministry.
