Thirteen artistes from across the country are coming together to recreate an evening of music that existed in Mughal havelis
almost 300 years ago. The chiming of ghungroo bells would match the strains of the sarangi and the beats of tabla. Titled Haveli, the two-hour-long show, will be held at Kamani auditorium today.
Arvind Ramanna, director of Hometown Productions, which is organising the event, says,Haveli music is not very popular these days as many of the havelis no longer exist and, even if they do,they have been modernised. Earlier, during the rule of kings, the havelis
were a hub for music and dance. We are trying to bring back the forgotten music.
Bollywood music composer Deepak Pandit, who has created the music design of the show, says,One of the purposes of the show is to bring haveli music to youngsters,so that they know about our tradition.
The performers include khartal player and Grammy awardee Dewo Khan, violinist Deepak Pandit,Odissi dancer Arushi Mudgal, tabla player Pt Arvind Kumar Azad, sitarist brothers Rafique and Shafique Khan,French drummer Stanley Jeoraj, sarangi player Ustad Fayaz Khan, saxophonist Sridhar Sagar,French bassist Mishko MBa and kamaiacha players Ghenwar Khan and Dare Khan.
Pandit says,We have brought together various Indian classical instruments such as the sitar and sarangi, and have combined it with traditional instruments such as the guitar and piano to appeal to the modern audience. This way, teenagers as well as those who are 60 years old can also enjoy the show.
The show will be held at
Kamani auditorium,Copernicus Marg,on July 19 at 6.30pm.
