Giving a boost to geoscientific studies in India, the Delhi University has launched India’s first ever five-year integrated MSc in Earth Sciences from this admission session.

Aspirants for the course must have opted for Science with Mathematics in plus two. There is no minimum percentage listed by the department, but preference will be given to those who have appeared for the IIT-JEE this year and secured a high rank. There are 25 seats, inclusive of reservation.

The Department of Geology, which has been granted the Center for Advance Studies status by the University Grants Commission, will teach the course. A unique feature of the course is its focus on today’s environmental challenges and urgent problems, apart from regular scientific studies conducted in the BSc and MSc programmes.

In the 10-semester course, specialisation will begin only in the sixth semester. Petroleum/coal exploration,Geoinformatics, earthquake geology and natural hazards are some of the areas in which specialisation is offered. Students wanting to opt out of the integrated course are granted a BSc degree upon completion of three years.

“The field of Petroleum is highly lucrative, with salary packages starting from Rs 6 lakh and going up to Rs 18 lakh per year,” said Assistant Professor Vimal Singh. The curriculum is high on practical orientation, with students required to undertake research projects and undergo constant training throughout the course’s duration.

Vikrant Jain,Associate Professor, said,“Research in Geology is not as diversified here as in developed countries. There is a huge demand for talented researchers and professionals who can spearhead the expansion of Geology research and exploration in India.”

Application forms can be collected from the Department of Geology. They can also be filled up and submitted online with all the required documents attached. The department will conduct a counselling session on July 19.
