Dream comeback for ABVP after 7 yrs,bags 3 DUSU seats

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad won the top three seats up for grabs in the Delhi University Students’ Union,leaving the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India with only one victory.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the top three seats up for grabs in the Delhi University Students’ Union,leaving the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) with only one victory.

ABVP’s A A Jitender Chaudhary is the president,while Priya Dabas and Neetu Dabas are the vice-president and secretary respectively. NSUI’s Akshay Kumar,who won his candidature after the NSUI reserved a seat for SC students,will be the new joint secretary of DUSU.

This is the first time after 2002-2003 DUSU under the presidentship of Nakul Bharadwaj that ABVP has won three seats. The outgoing DUSU had ABVP’s Kriti Wadhera as vice-president,NSUI’s Arshdeep Kaur as secretary and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha’s Anupriya Tyagi as joint secretary.

Manoj Choudhary himself is an ABVP member,having contested as an Independent after his parent organisation denied him a ticket. He eventually won with ABVP support after the organisation’s official candidate was disqualified for violation of the model code of conduct.

Jithender Chaudhary,student of MA Buddhist Studies,polled 9,259 votes,1,943 more than NSUIs Harish Choudhary. Vice-president-elect Priya Dabas,also from the Department of Buddhist Studies,polled 1,518 votes more than NSUI’s A A Vardhan Choudhary,who polled 7,161 votes.

The new DUSU secretary,Neetu Dabas,is from Hindu College and polled 9,197 votes. She won against NSUI’s Deepika Deshwal by 4,495 votes. NSUI’s Akshay Kumar,from the Department of Buddhist Studies,won against ABVP’s A A Pandit Saurabh Uniyal by 581 votes.

The contest was reduced to a duel between the two big players,with the a disjoint bunch of Left parties donning various hues of red reduced to watching from the sidelines. CPI-affiliated AISF will seek to take positives from the elections after its presidential candidate Aparajitha Raja came third,with 2,999 votes. AISF’s Amardeep Singh also came fourth in the battle for vice-presidentship,behind AISA’s Akram Akhtar.
