According to office bearers of Gujarat NSUI, as many as 12 workers in Ahmedabad and four workers in Anand were detained, from their residences in the wee hours of Monday, by the police in order to deter them from staging a protest in Ahmedabad later during the day.

They also torched BJP flags and an effigy representing the ruling party. One of the protestors criticised the Centre for punishing the innocents and allowing the guilty to escape punitive action.

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) members had earlier sat on a protest outside the Vice Chancellor's office, saying that programs which divide the students on the basis of their religion, should not be allowed in the university.

The two-day seminar titled "Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Temple: Emerging Scenario" is scheduled to begin on January 9 at the Delhi University's Arts Faculty.
