A day after the Delhi government ordered that the sluice gates of 17 major drains be closed to prevent Yamuna water from entering the city, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi assured its councillors that this will not lead to overflooding of stormwater drains in the Capital.
MCD councillors,on Wednesday, raised doubts if the closing of sluice gates would only increase waterlogging in the city. They further argued that the action could add to the already prevalent insanitary conditions here.
However,Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra assured the councillors that the closing of sluice gates was a routine precautionary exercise undertaken by the Flood Control Department to ensure that water from Yamuna does not flow into the city and cause a deluge. He added that the corporation has installed suction pumps at all the 17 points for sucking excess rainwater from the drains and pumping it back into the river.
There is no fear of drains overflowing in the city. At eight of these points,MCD has installed 10 suction pumps each, while the Flood Control Department and DJB have made arrangements to pump out excess rainwater from the remaining nine points, Mehra said.
According to the Flood Control Department, sluice gates of around 17 drains from Wazirabad to Mukarba Chowk have been shut to prevent Yamuna water from entering the city.
The Corporation,in the meantime, received 117 complaints of waterlogging from places across the Capital on Wednesday.
