Despite the low price, Delhi doesn’t take to beer like Bucharest

Beer — the ambrosia to mortals — is widely regarded as the liquid gold. The sight of a pint sweating on the outside and with a ring of froth settled on top is quite seducing. But when it comes at a steep price, then there is no shame in not buying your friends a round at the local watering hole. Not if you are in Delhi though. GoEuro came out with a beer index that painstakingly ranks 75 cities from around the world. Delhi makes its way to number five, meaning that it is cheaper to drink beer in India’s capital than in Beijing or Tokyo.

How does Delhi fare in comparison to other beer guzzlers around the globe? It seems like Delhi can be labelled as a teetotaller since it is second to only Cairo in terms of average annual consumption. A Delhiite would consume an average of 6 liters of beer in a year according to data collected by the World Health Organisation. That is 21 times less than what a person in Prague would wash down his pretzel with a beer everyday. Also the people of Delhi would spend $1,513 less than what those in Helsinki would spend on beer. Even before the recent hike of 14% in liquor tax in the state,  Delhi hasn’t taken to beer like Bucharest (133 liters) did.
