Desperate govt offers sops to engineers to finish projects

If the whip doesn’t work,Public Works Department minister Rajkumar Chauhan is hoping sops would.

If the whip doesn’t work,Public Works Department minister Rajkumar Chauhan is hoping sops would.

On a whirlwind tour to inspect much-delayed streetscaping work,Chauhan announced engineers who finish work a month before the Games will be given monetary awards, while others will be punished.

The minister inspected upgrade work in South and West Delhi, where he found the pace of work slow at several stretches. “He stated he would recommend the name of the officers who will execute the work in time to the Chief Minister and would take strict action against officers for dereliction of duty,” a statement issued by Chauhan’s office read.

Chauhan inspected streetscaping projects at Raja Garden,Moti Bagh,Naraina,Dhaula Kuan,Mehrauli-Badarpur road and the Ring Road. The visit comes after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit instructed all government departments to complete digging work by July 31,clear away debris from road sides by August 10 and complete all projects by August 31.

“On some locations, work is lagging behind and he (Chauhan) directed the officers to work at a faster pace. He further advised civic agencies to work together for a successful Games,” the statement added.

Chauhan also pulled up officials for substandard greening work at Naraina and Moti Bagh flyovers, said a senior official. The minister, however, said projects will be completed in time. “I would inspect work in other areas and also make surprise visits to check progress made in respect of the orders I issued in today’s inspection,” he said.
