Looking at previous years, the district recorded 186 dengue cases in 2024. (Representative image)Gurgaon reported six new cases of dengue in the last week of October, taking the total tally for the year to 61, according to data from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP). In parallel, malaria cases in the district so far this year have reached eight — the second-highest count in the past five years.
To assess the current situation, the NVBDCP’s media bulletin noted that twelve samples were tested for dengue on Saturday, alongside ten rapid tests. This brings the cumulative number of rapid tests and samples analysed for dengue this year to 8,008.
Despite the recent spike, only one of the 61 dengue cases is currently hospitalised, while the remaining patients have recovered.
On the trend, Dr Tushar Tayal, Associate Director of Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon, said: “There has been an increase in the number of dengue cases in the past week, which is contrary to the usual trend. Every year, post-Diwali, there is typically a decline in dengue patients. However, this season has seen a resurgence, with fever patients testing positive for dengue again. The illness is, however, relatively mild.”
Looking at previous years, the district recorded 186 dengue cases in 2024. In comparison, 2023 saw 276 cases with one fatality, down from 440 in 2022. The year 2021 logged 327 cases and one death, while 2020 recorded just 51 infections.
Meanwhile, the malaria situation has remained stable. No new cases have been reported since August, keeping the total for 2025 at eight. Last year, the district recorded 13 malaria cases — a sharp rise from zero cases two years prior. In 2021, three cases were reported. Gurgaon has not reported any confirmed dengue or malaria deaths so far this year.
In response to the spike in vector-borne diseases, district authorities have intensified preventive measures. Rapid fever mass survey teams have covered over 18.84 lakh households since 1 January, preparing 2,18,063 blood slides for malaria testing.
To curb the spread, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has been conducting fogging operations, officials said. Further, health department officials have been inspecting and emptying coolers and containers in affected areas.
As per health officials, Larvicide (Temephos) has been sprayed in containers and ditches, and notices have been issued to defaulters where mosquito larvae were found. Public awareness campaigns have also been launched to adapt protective measures, officials said.
The most affected areas in Gurgaon include Wazirabad, Pataudi, Garhi, Rural Gurgaon, Daultabad, Nakhrola, Badshahpur, Palra, and Bhangrola.
On Saturday alone, health officials inspected 3,562 houses, with 45 showing signs of mosquito larva formation. Additionally, 26,743 containers were checked, of which 234 tested positive this year, officials said. So far, 9,422 notices have been served to defaulters under municipal laws.
