Last years runners-up Delhi United were crowned winners of the DSA Senior Division League with an exciting 3-2 victory over Shahdara FC at the Thyagaraj Stadium on Tuesday. The match, played under floodlights, got off to a fast start with both teams making repeated attempts at goal. Delhi United could have won the match with a bigger and more comfortable margin but have only themselves to blame for missed several opportunities from close range. It was Shahdara FC which drew first blood in the 17 th minute with a long throw that had the Delhi United defence in disarray, and Nigerian national Anthony punted the ball past goalkeeper Rajkumar.
That goal seemed to cast a pallor over Delhi United as they failed to get into their opponents half and needed the lemon-break to shake off their lethargy. The all-red brigade came out renewed in the second half and local player Obed Kahmei instantly gave them something to cheer about. Unassisted,he dribbled past one defender and then after wrong footing Shahdara custodian Rakeev Kumar, crunched the ball to his left. Three minutes after scoring the equaliser,United were celebrating taking the lead. Once again it was Kahmei, who showed his trickery. With the goalkeeper rushing out to block any attempted drive,Kahmei with only inches to spare, lobbed the ball over his grabbing fingers and into the corner of the goal on the bounce.
The momentum was clearly with Delhi United in the second half. They pressed on relentlessly and,to a handful of people watching,it was only a matter of time before they got the third. It came in the 67 th minute through former Mohun Bagan player and India international Rishi Kapoor. Rishis strike, unlike the first two goals, was unadulterated power. A foul just inside the Shahdara half some forty yards away from the goal gave him the opportunity. The offence actually took place closer to the goal than the referee placed it but Rishi wasnt complaining. Rakeev was still nervously fidgeting with the defenders placements, when Rishi launched a thunderbolt into the right corner of the goal. We had such confidence at that point that I was confident of scoring despite the distance, said Rishi.
Time-wasting tactics
Confidence though quickly lead to overconfidence. In the 71 st minute,Ifeani, the Shahdara striker, capitalised to score off the break. Suddenly United were on the backfoot. As Shahadar looked for the equaliser,United spent the remaining 20 minutes of regular time doing everything to delay proceedings. Goalkeeper Rajkumar hit a goalkick and then collapsed in seeming agony. Medics rushed on the field as time ticked by. Yeh sab karna padta hai, he said sheepishly after the match. Play was almost entirely in Uniteds half and it seemed Shahdaras goal was inevitable. Uniteds founder,Lal Bahadur Basnet tapped impatiently at his watch in the five minutes of extra time. A free kick on the edge of the penalty box in the first minute gave Shahdara hope but the shot went straight to the keeper who made the most important save of the match. Four minutes later,Delhi United were champions.
