Much ado about nothing
Last week,a senior officer of the Special Cell spotted a photojournalist from Kerala taking pictures of cricketer Sreesanth from the police residential quarters, which is located next to the special cell office.
Attendance compulsory
Under the four-year undergraduate format in DU,it is not just the students but even the teachers from various disciplines who will have to compulsorily dabble in foundation papers. Incidentally,an English teacher was asked to attend an orientation session for teachers with regard to a foundation paper building mathematical ability last week. Much to the teachers surprise, the invitation said that her presence was mandatory.
Traffic trouble
Due to Metro construction work in Jamia Nagar, the entrance to Jamia University has become a major bottleneck. Many students and teachers have to spend at least 40 minutes negotiating traffic to get to their respective departments in the university. To make the admission process smooth,Jamia authorities have issued an advisory asking applicants to report to the examination hall at least an hour in advance. Prospective students have also been asked not to bring their vehicles to the university. The advisory emphasises that parents and siblings need not accompany those taking admission tests as there will be no space for anyone other than the examinees at the JMI university.
No takers
Be it for the Metro construction, the annual desilting of drains before monsoon, the laying of water pipelines or just relaying of roads, almost all peripheral roads outside most localities of Delhi are dug up now. In Alaknanda, the muck from a cleaned up drain has been lying outside for over two months now, with no one is ready to remove it. In Friends Colony, roads have remained dug up since last November, apparently so the water utility could lay pipelines. While the municipal agency says it has not been paid by the Delhi Jal Board to fix the road yet,DJB claims there is a running account with the civic body for all such payments. Moreover, when DJB proposed fixing all dug up roads, all but the municipal body agreed to the proposal. The civic body had insisted that another agency fix the roads. However, they remain dug up till now.
Dogs best friends
The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has been flooded with requests to issue dog feeder cards to animal caretakers who apply for the credential. More than 400 applications from all over the country have come in since the project was announced in January. The AWBI decided it would issue IDs to people who feed stray dogs,so that neighbours do not harass the caretakers for looking after the animals. The AWBI wants people to know what the caretakers do is legal and is also encouraged. Officials from the AWBI said a lot of the applications were rolling in from Delhi.
Spotlight on councillors
It is essentially the Municipal councillors who are getting all the attention of the newly elected BJP chief. With assembly elections approaching,BJPs Delhi president Vijay Goel, who is apparently unhappy with MLAs,has focused his energies on the councillors. According to the councillors,Goel has entrusted them with the task of highlighting corruption in the Congress and to project the BJP as a better alternative for a government. Councillors say they are also expected to raise funds for the party.
