The Delhi Residents Welfare Association (RWA) conclave drew RWAs from across the city to Talkatora Indoor Stadium Saturday.
Speaking at the event, East Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Harsh Malhotra said such events are essential to connect people with the administration. “This is an opportunity for us to know about the needs of people and our shortfalls,” he said. Malhotra added that the civic body’s main function is to ensure cleanliness and quality primary education.
On a question about problems caused by weekly bazaars, he said, “As a mayor, I’m not ashamed to say that nothing has changed about problems caused by weekly bazaars when compared to my childhood.” He said the Delhi government is yet to take a stand on vending and non-vending zones and that weekly bazaars also come under this section.
The Mayor also said it is not possible for authorities alone to do everything and urged people to extend their support as responsible citizens. “Don’t just clean your homes, clean your streets as well,” he added.
Raja Chhabra, president of RWA Forum Delhi, which organised the event, said their aim is to educate people about their rights.
“Even people who have been heads of RWAs for the past 20 years don’t know their rights and what the government owes them, “ said Chhabra.
