Delhi records highest malaria cases in 5 yrs

The West Zone, which has reported 77 cases, has been the worst hit this year.

With over 100 cases so far this month, Delhi has reported the highest number of malaria incidents in the past five years. The number of dengue cases is also the highest, barring last year’s count.

The Capital has seen 587 malaria cases this year. Of these, 157 cases have been reported in October. In contrast, only 37 cases were reported in October last year, 75 in 2022, 47 in 2021 and 34 in 2020. An additional 152 cases that have been reported with wrong or incomplete addresses.

The West Zone, which has reported 77 cases, has been the worst hit this year.

Vector-borne diseases are on the rise in Delhi with 2,587 cases of dengue and 83 cases of chikungunya reported until October 11 this year.

Of the total dengue cases, 957 cases were reported this month. In addition, 1,039 additional cases have been reported with incomplete or wrong addresses.

MCD has recognised three dengue-related deaths so far. With 385 cases, the Najafgarh Zone stands the worst hit.

Of the 83 chikungunya cases reported so far, 14 cases were registered in the past week. Twenty-eight cases have been reported in October, which surpasses the total tally of chikungunya cases reported in the month over the past five years — five were reported in October last year, 17 in 2022, 25 in 2021, and 17 in 2020. An additional 54 cases have been reported this year with incomplete or wrong addresses.
