The Delhi Police has recorded the statements of five out of the seven wrestlers in connection with the sexual harassment and POCSO Act case lodged against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, said officials Thursday.

Last week on Friday, two FIRs were lodged against Singh after the seven wrestlers, including a minor, filed multiple complaints. While the first pertained to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under the POCSO Act, the second, based on the complaints of the women wrestlers, named Singh and WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, said sources. Both have been booked under IPC sections 354A (making sexually coloured remarks) and 354D (stalking).

In their statements, police said, the women have pointed out alleged incidents of molestation and stalking by Singh and Tomar.

A police source said, “In total, the women have at least pointed to 8-10 incidents from 2012 to 2022. Some of these reportedly took place at Singh’s bungalow and others during domestic and foreign travel. They have named international tournaments as well. Sections of stalking were added because the women alleged Singh would allegedly call them repeatedly and ask for favours. However, no evidence or witnesses have been named, produced or found during enquiry.”

Police are also looking into call records, photos and other details of the complainants as part of the probe.

To gather more details and verify claims, police sources Thursday said a notice has been sent to the WFI seeking information about the tournaments and incidents mentioned in the complaints.

“We have asked them to give us details of who all were part of these domestic and international tournaments, how many witnesses were present, if they have any information of molestation, and other details,” said an officer.

Police said the investigation was halted for some time after a scuffle broke out between wrestlers and personnel at Jantar Mantar Wednesday night.

“We have to record official statements of two other wrestlers. That will be done on Friday now. At present, we have recorded statements of five wrestlers, including that of the minor,” said a senior police officer.

Police are yet to arrest Singh and Tomar.

Asked if Singh will be issued a summons to join the probe, the officer said: “We have no evidence against him yet. We are yet to record all statements under Section 161 and Section 164 (court). As per investigation requirement, notices will be sent. For now, we have issued notice to WFI and are waiting for their report.”

Police will soon push to record the women wrestlers’ statements in front of a magistrate to begin court proceedings. The seven complainants were provided with security but many refused the services, said police, adding that forces have still “earmarked” the areas.
