Delhi News Highlights: Delhi sees modest relief in pollution levels as AQI drops to 169

Delhi News Highlights: The Delhi AQI was 193 at 5 am on Saturday, as per the Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi. This was far higher than 129 recorded at 5:30 am on Friday and 91 recorded at the same time on Thursday.

Delhi News Highlights: The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was 169 (moderately polluted) on Sunday morning (Oct 12), marking a dip from the 193 AQI observed at 5 am on Saturday. This, however, is still a jump from the 129 recorded at 5.30 am on Friday and 91 recorded on Thursday. The AQI reading is categorised as Good (0-50), Satisfactory (51-100), Moderately Polluted (101-200), Poor (201-300), Very Poor (301-400), and Severe (401-500). The higher the AQI reading, the unhealthier it is to breathe.

Delhi weather: The maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi are expected to be around 30°C to 32°C and 18°C to 19°C, respectively, as forecast by the  India Meteorological Department(IMD). The minimum and maximum temperatures over Delhi/NCR have remained around the same for the past few days.

Delhi zoo bird flu-free: Meanwhile, over a month after a bird flu outbreak forced its closure, the National Zoological Park (NZP) in Delhi is likely to reopen after October 30, with all recent tests for avian influenza returning negative. Delhi zoo director Dr Sanjeet Kumar said that while no active presence of the virus has been detected, the management will conduct two additional rounds of sampling at an interval of 15 days before taking a final call on reopening. The zoo was closed to visitors on August 30 after several birds, including painted storks and black-headed ibises, died owing to an avian influenza outbreak.

Delhi News LIVE Updates: Water supply in certain areas of Delhi neighbourhoods will face disruption on Sunday due to the complete shutdown of underground reservoir at Palam for repair works, officials said.

"This is due to the 33" flow meter replacement work along with damaged pipeline rectification work, which is scheduled for Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm," the New Delhi Municipal Council said.

The afternoon water supply at the underground tanks at Moti Bagh, Netaji Nagar, East and West Kidwai Nagar will not be received from Palam due to complete shutdown.

Meanwhile, the evening supply of water will be disrupted at Moti Bagh, Netaji Nagar area, ARD complex, Lal Building at RK Puram, WTC Narouji Nagar, SIC Cetre at Factory Road, East and West Kidwai Nagar.

While the city's low was 19.4 degrees Celsius, 1.6 notches below normal, the maximum temperature settled at 30.3 degrees Celsius, 3.9 notches below normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A teacher was arrested for allegedly grabbing a 16-year-old student by the hair and assaulting him over incomplete homework at a coaching centre in Delhi's Munirka, police said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Anand Kumar, runs Jeevan Deep Education Centre in Munirka, police stated, adding that he also threatened the student not to disclose the incident to anyone.

"A complaint was received on October 9 from the victim, a class 11 student of a government school in RK Puram, who alleged that he was beaten by his tutor on October 6 around 8 pm," a senior police officer said. — PTI

Modi said the two big schemes -- a Rs 24,000-crore Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PM-DDKY) and a Rs 11,440-crore Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses -- would "change the fate of millions of farmers".

The PM-DDKY aims to transform 100 low-performing agricultural districts based on the Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) model. The scheme will focus on enhancing crop productivity, promoting crop diversification, improving irrigation and storage facilities, and ensuring credit access in the selected districts.

For the pulses mission, Modi urged farmers to increase pulses acreage by 35 lakh hectares by 2030 to boost production and achieve self-reliance.

The mission targets raising pulses production from the current 252.38 lakh tonne to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31, thereby reducing import dependency.
