Delhi News Live Updates: AAP accuses Delhi BJP govt of halting pensions for widows, divorced women

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday accused the Delhi BJP government of discontinuing pensions for widows and divorced women, alleging that payments have been stalled for the past two months.

There was no immediate response from the BJP on the allegations. Addressing a press conference, AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "Widows and divorced women have not received their pensions for the last two months. The BJP government is plotting to cut the pension of thousands of women who rely on this support."

Bharadwaj further alleged that the BJP's move is a deliberate attempt to dismantle social welfare schemes implemented by the previous AAP government.

"The whole country is fed up with listening to the unnecessary speeches of the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party," he added.

The confrontation between the BJP and AAP has intensified ever since the saffron party stormed to power in Delhi in February, ending AAP's decade-long rule in the national capital.

Delhi News Live Updates: DJB starts work to desilt Wazirabad pond to increase storage capacity

Aiming to increase water production in the national capital, the Delhi Jal Board has started work to increase the storage capacity of the Wazirabad pond area.

Earlier this month, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma visited the Wazirabad water treatment plant (WTP) and announced that the government is working on a project to carry out desilting of the Wazirabad pond in North Delhi district.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has now issued a tender, inviting companies to carry out the work at a cost of Rs 25 crore and remove 3.63 lakh cubic metres of silt from the pond. As per estimates, the desilting work will increase the water-holding capacity of the raw water pond by approximately 100 million gallons per day (MGD).

The Wazirabad barrage is the first point of interception of the Yamuna River in the national capital, where the DJB constructed one of the biggest WTPs in the city, having an average water production capacity of 138 MGD.

Over the past few years, Delhi's water production grew from an average of 927 MGD in 2020-21 to 990-1,000 MGD in 2024. However, the requirement of the city is around 1,290 MGD, as per the Economic Survey, which the DJB is yet to achieve. "The work will be carried out upstream of the river, starting from Wazirabad up to Ramghat, which is a distance of around 1 km. Usually, during the monsoon season, silt is carried away downstream, but this is legacy silt, which has accumulated over the years,” a DJB official said.

According to the Delhi government, the desilting process would be completed in two months, after which the pond would be able to store water at double its current capacity. During an earlier inspection, Verma drank treated water from the plant and assured that it was completely safe and drinkable.

"The Wazirabad WTP has a storage capacity of 220 MGD, but due to silt accumulation along a one-km stretch, it is currently holding only around 100 MGD," the water minister said. Verma also said that while Delhi receives adequate water from its neighbouring states, improvements were needed for storage infrastructure and leakage prevention.

Delhi News Live Updates: ‘Couldn’t believe my eyes and ears’: Delhi HC directs Ramdev to pull down all ‘Hamdard’s sharbat jihad’ ads

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali to immediately pull down all its advertisements referring to Hamdard’s popular drink Rooh Afza as “Sharbat Jihad.”

“I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears,” Justice Amit Bansal said in an oral observation.

Hamdard has moved the Court in a trademark disparagement suit against Patanjali. In a social media post advertising Patanjali’s summer refreshment drink, Ramdev contrasted it with Rooh Afza and claimed that the competitor’s profits are used “for building masjids and madrasas.”

The Court also directed Patanjali to file an affidavit within five days recording a statement by Ramdev that he shall not issue any such statements, advertisements, or social media posts in the future. Read

Delhi News Live Updates: HC reserves verdict in cases seeking quashing of FIR against Tablighi Jamaat members accused of spreading COVID-19

The Delhi High Court Monday reserved a verdict in a slew of petitions seeking quashing of 16 FIRs involving 70 Indian nationals associated with the Tablighi Jamaat who were accused of spreading COVID-19 in 2020.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna reserved a verdict in the 16 First Information Reports involving the Indian nationals.

They were charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including criminal conspiracy, for allegedly housing foreign nationals in different mosques during the pandemic between March 24, 2020, and March 30, 2020. While 195 foreign nationals were named in the FIRs, however, in most chargesheets, they were not charge sheeted, or the cognisance of the chargesheet was refused by the magistrate court on principles of double jeopardy.

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch initially instituted an FIR under Section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, and IPC sections 188, 269, 270, 120-B, and 271, along with provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, against seven Indians. Read

Delhi News Live Updates: HC refers to Draupadi, points out women ‘considered as husband’s property and its devastating consequences’

The Delhi High Court recently cited the example of the loss of Draupadi in a gamble that led to the war in the Mahabharata as an “absurdity of treating a woman as chattel”, while dropping adultery charges against a man.

In an order on April 17, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna set aside a sessions court order summoning a man, accused of continuing an adulterous relationship with the complainant’s former wife. The accused man was initially discharged by a magistrate court but was subsequently summoned by a sessions court after the magistrate court’s order was challenged by the complainant.

Relying on the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in the case of Joseph Shine, Justice Krishna observed about adultery in the order, “What is clear, therefore, is that this archaic law has long outlived its purpose and does not square with today’s constitutional morality in that the very object with which it was made, has since become manifestly arbitrary having lost its rationale long ago and become in today’s day and age, utterly irrational.”

“The woman being considered as the property of the husband and its devastating consequences are well documented in the Mahabharata wherein Draupadi was put on stake in a game of gamble by none other than her own husband Yudhishthira where other four brothers were the silent spectators and Draupadi had no voice to protest for her dignity,” said Justice Krishna. Delhi News Live Updates: What the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act says on mayoral polls

As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, the MCD is required to elect a new mayor and deputy mayor for which elections are supposed to be held in April every year.

Apart from the councillor, 14 MLAs (nominated from parties in proportion to their representation in the Delhi Assembly), seven Lok Sabha MPs (all BJP) and three Rajya Sabha MPs (at the moment, all of them are from AAP) are going to be a part of the mayoral electorate.

In the previous mayoral elections, the BJP had only one nominated MLA. Given that their numbers in the Delhi Assembly have now increased, the number of elected MLAs who will be a part of the electorate during the upcoming mayoral elections will also see an increase.

Delhi News Live Updates: AAP refuses to contest mayoral polls, Atishi tells why

AAP withdraws from filing nominations for the mayoral elections. “We have seen this throughout the country, be it goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra — the BJP forms it’s government by breaking other parties. Even in Delhi, after expecting a defeat in the municipal corporation, the BJP proposed delimitation,” Atishi said.

“Despite us winning the MCD elections, they threatened and paid our councillors to join their party, which is why today they are in a majority at the MCD. The AAP does not believe in doing this, which is why we will not be fighting the mayor elections,” she added.
