According to the Delhi Fire Services, the blaze erupted at the hospital at around 11.30 pm following which nine fire tenders were rushed to the site. The fire is suspected to have been caused by short-circuit.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next kin of each deceased, news agency PTI reported. “The fire tragedy at a hospital in Delhi is heart-rending. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this incredibly difficult time. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest,” Modi said in a post on X.
In a second such case, three individuals were killed in a fire that engulfed a residential building in the Krishna Nagar district of East Delhi during the early hours of Sunday. These incidents occurred shortly after a massive fire in Gujarat’s Rajkot city killed at least 27 people as a crowded game zone caught fire and the building collapsed.

Delhi children's hospital fire: NCPCR chief blames authorities for tragedy
NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo on Sunday blamed the authorities for the fire which erupted at a private children's hospital in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar which claimed the lives of seven infants, news agency PTI reported. "The way oxygen was being filled in the hospital was hazardous. Our member visited the hospital and will be submitting her report soon and then we will be issuing a notice to Delhi government in the matter," PTI quoted Kanoongo as saying in a video message. The NCPCR chief further accused the Delhi government of not paying attention to the notice of the commission in 2021, which recommended regular fire safety audits at hospitals which had Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and Special Newborn Care Unit, among other medical facilities for children.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj directs chief secy to ensure speedy probe into Delhi children's hospital fire
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Sunday directed the chief secretary to ensure a speedy inquiry into the fire incident at a private children's hospital in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar.
Following the incident, Bharadwaj sent directions to Health Secretary SB Deepak Kumar and Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar. In the communication, he said directions were emailed to Deepak Kumar since he was not responding to phone calls and messages.
He demanded a thorough inquiry to identify the people responsible for the negligence.
Bharadwaj said that rescued infants would receive free treatment at top private hospitals through Farishtey scheme.
To aid the affected families, he ordered quick compensation and urged authorities to speed up the arrests of those accountable for the hospital's management.
Delhi hospital fire: NCPCR deploys team to investigate
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has deployed a team to probe into the fire incident at a private children's hospital in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar that left seven newborns dead.
In a post on X, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson (NCPCR) Priyank Kanoongo said the commission has taken cognisance of the fire incident and the newborns' deaths.
An NCPCR team will visit the hospital to investigate the incident, Kanoongo said.

Fire breaks out in residential building in east Delhi, three dead
Three individuals lost their lives in a fire that erupted in a residential building located in the Krishna Nagar district of east Delhi in the early hours of Sunday, the Delhi Fire Services said.
"We received a call of fire at 2.35 am from Krishna Nagar. The fire was doused at 7.20 am. Total five fire tenders were rushed to the spot," Delhi Fire Services (DFS) chief Atul Garg said.
"A total of 13 people were rescued but three were declared dead," he said.
Seven newborns die in fire at East Delhi children's hospital; Legal action initiated against owner
- On May 25, 2024, at approximately 11:30 PM, a PCR call concerning a fire was received at PS Vivek Vihar.
- Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a fire had broken out in Baby Care New Born Hospital at C-54, Vivek Vihar, also affecting its adjacent building.
- The SHO, ATO Vivek Vihar, and ACP Vivek Vihar also reached the spot
- Inside the hospital, there were 12 newborn babies admitted, with one already deceased prior to the fire.
- All 12 newborn babies were successfully rescued from the hospital and relocated to East Delhi Advance NICU Hospital for treatment.
- Tragically, 6 of the rescued babies were declared brought dead, resulting in a total of 7 casualties.
- Legal action is being pursued against the owner of the hospital, identified as Naveen Kichi residing at 258, Bharon Enclave, Paschim Vihar, Delhi.
- The deceased bodies have been transferred to GTB Hospital for postmortem examinations.
