On July 9, the first breakthrough was achieved in the 21-km tunnel which is being constructed between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata in Maharashtra, marking the successful completion of a 2.7-km section of the tunnel (Express Photo)The National Capital Region Transport Corporation’s (NCRTC) budget was slashed to Rs 2,918 crore for the financial year 2025-26 from Rs 3,596 crore last year in the Union Budget.
The agency, which comes under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and is responsible for developing the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in the NCR, saw its revenue expenditure go up from Rs 58 crore last year to Rs 447 crore for the following year, while its capital expenditure was slashed from Rs 3,538 crore to Rs 2,471 crore.
Behind the decrease could be the fact that a large section of the 82-km-long Meerut-Delhi RRTS corridor is nearly complete. Around 55 km of the corridor is now operational after a 13-km stretch between New Ashok Nagar and Sahibabad was inaugurated earlier this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The construction of other sections — New Ashok Nagar-Sarai Kale Khan and Meerut South-Modipuram — is progressing at a rapid pace, officials had said.
Further, the National Capital Regional Planning Board (NCRPB) will see an increase in Internal and Extra Budgetary Resources (IEBR) raised from Rs 300 crore in 2024-25 to Rs 360 crore in the following year. IEBR refers to resources raised through profits, loans and equity. The Board is responsible for making plans for regional development in the NCR and coordinating with the constituent states.
