After the two were picked up, they allegedly misled the police at first by saying that they had dumped the body in Munak Canal

A field investigating officer for a Mumbai-based company surveying copyright infringement was allegedly kidnapped, beaten and murdered in Outer North Delhi after he reported that a factory at Samaypur Badli was manufacturing fake electrical equipment.

The police identified the victim as Putul Gohain (51), who has been missing since February 18. His report about the factory led to a raid by the District Investigation Unit of the police and the closure of the factory in January, they added. Accused Amit Yadav and Nitin Yadav have been arrested.

Gohain, who hailed from Assam but lived in Rohini with his family, was reported missing by his wife on February 18. The police said Gohain worked for a company that conducted surveys and filed reports about companies that indulged in copyright infringement of products.

“Gohain was viciously beaten in September after a factory owner in Gokalpuri suspected him of providing information against him,” said a source.

According to police, Amit and Nitin were arrested on Thursday after CCTV footage showed Gohain sitting in a car with them on February 17.

After the two were picked up, they allegedly misled the police at first by saying that they had dumped the body in Munak Canal. However, a scrutiny of vehicles from toll plazas near the Uttar Pradesh border led the police to a car matching one on which the accused had crossed the plaza while on way to Ghaziabad on the night of the murder.

“We are now searching for the man’s body near Baghpat… The body was tied up in a plastic sack before being dumped,” said the source in the police. According to police, Amit and Nitin have allegedly admitted they killed Gohain, as they suspected him to be behind the raid on the factory and its closure in January. “The Yadavs had wanted to broker a deal with Gohain… asking him to not provide any more information in exchange for money. While Gohain and the Yadavs haggled over the amount, one of the accused lost his temper and hit Gohain hard, unexpectedly killing him,” said the source.
