Regular CCTV monitoring, deploying security personnel, and limiting the number of attendants accompanying patients — the Delhi Health Department has directed government hospitals to enforce such measures to increase security on their premises.

This comes in the wake of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s direction to all central government-run hospitals to enhance their security measures in light of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The health department, in a meeting, instructed medical superintendents and directors of Delhi government hospitals to prepare an ‘access control plan’ and ensure rational distribution of security personnel in crucial departments. Resident doctors are to be included in such discussions.

During the meeting, Health Secretary S B Deepak Kumar also reviewed the present safety and security plan being followed at hospitals and suggested improvements as per the Centre’s guidelines.

“All areas within the hospital premises should have proper CCTV-based monitoring and must be well-lit throughout the day. Regular coordination with the police department should be ensured to ensure 24/7 monitoring/patrolling. Entry of a limited number of attendants of patients should be ensured,” said a senior official from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In addition, a display board laying out the state laws for the protection of healthcare workers and relevant sections of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita will be installed, along with punitive/penalty details in conspicuous places inside the hospital premises, in the local language and English.

One of the hospital’s directors said in the meeting that they have requested Delhi Police to provide more security. “We will be installing streetlights at dark corners on the hospital premises and deploy more security guards,” he added.
