Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena will inaugurate a fleet of 400 electric buses in Delhi Tuesday along with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal amid the ongoing “credit war” in the National Capital for the works done ahead of the G20 Summit. The buses were bought under the Central government’s FAME II scheme.

The new electric buses will be state-of-the-art vehicles with modern technologies and features such as air conditioners, CCTV cameras, bus kneeling with ramp facility, panic buttons, and space for wheelchairs. They will also have dedicated pink seats for female passengers. Besides, the buses will have live video streaming in case of emergency, and a fire detection and suppression system. They will be directly monitored by the Central Command Control room.

Earlier, the inauguration of about 100 e-buses – which had arrived in May – was delayed over the question of who would launch them. The buses were stationed at the Mayapuri depot for nearly a month and were finally pressed into service without a formal launch.

Sources then said, “The inauguration was cancelled following a letter from the Industries Department (central government) that as the e-buses were bought under the Central government’s scheme and money…(central government representatives) should also participate in the inauguration.”

According to sources, “these are the reasons why the buses are now being inaugurated by both the L-G and the chief minister”. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot will also be present at the inaugural event.

The government currently operates 3,670 buses under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and 3,033 buses under cluster services. It aims to add 5,000 more buses to the city fleet soon.
