Rajkot resident Rajesh Khimji Sakriya, who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday at a Jan Sunwai programme, allegedly has a history of indulging in violent behaviour and had harmed himself once with a blade, a Delhi Police officer said on Saturday.

The officer, privy to the ongoing investigations, said that following a fight with his wife in 2022, Sakriya had allegedly slashed his head with a blade to terrorise his family in Rajkot. He had to be administered nine stitches, the officer added.

The officer further said that the Delhi Police team, which has visited Rajkot following the attack, has found that Sakriya — an autorickshaw driver — was previously involved in 10 criminal cases, including illicit liquor smuggling and assault, lodged in Gujarat.

He added that in 2017, Sakriya had allegedly attacked a person with a sword and beaten him up with a bat used for washing clothes.

Besides being booked multiple times under the Gujarat Prohibition Act for supplying liquor illegally, preventive action was also taken against Sakriya in 2021 under Section 56 (removal of persons about to commit offence) of the Bombay Police Act, the officer further said.

The police, meanwhile, said that Sakriya was on Saturday confronted with his friend – also an autorickshaw driver – with whom he had shared a video he had clicked of Gupta’s Shalimar Bagh residence after he arrived in Delhi.

Sakriya had also allegedly called him multiple times before the attack.

Police said the investigation has revealed that the friend was aware of Sakriya’s plan to meet the Chief Minister and had even sent him Rs 2,000 via online transaction as financial assistance.
