(Representative image)Abhay Sikarwar, arrested late Thursday for allegedly murdering a 64-year-old businessman, at whose Panchsheel Park house he was employed as a caretaker by a backpacking hostel, did not undergo a police verification process when he had landed the job.
Sonali Chopra, the lawyer of deceased Rohit Kumar Alagh’s family, said the victim had rented out the third floor of his house to the hostel. “Sikarwar worked at the hostel around four to five years ago,” she said.
Maintaining that Sikarwar did not undergo the police verification process, she added, “It was the company’s onus to get his verification done.”
Chopra further said that Sikarwar had not worked in the house since 2020, after the hostel shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Asked about the family’s interactions with Sikarwar, she said, “Tushar (the victim’s elder son) was living in the US at that time and the younger one was studying in college. They never met him.”

Managing Committee member of the cooperative society, Pankaj Vats, said, “We had held servant verification camps till a few years ago. But since then, we have realised that residents are reluctant to take part in the process. They usually resist because the domestic workers feel uncomfortable and at times end up quitting their jobs if asked undergo police verification.”
