Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi, along with other officials, inspect the ongoing construction works at the Sarai Kale Khan half flyover project. (Twitter/AtishiAAP) Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi inspected the ongoing construction works at the Sarai Kale Khan half flyover project early on Monday and “pulled up officials” over the delay, asking them to “expedite the construction”.
The Indian Express had reported that the three-lane flyover is unlikely to be completed before the G20 summit in September, which means that the movement of traffic will likely be hampered on the Ring Road towards ITO, Central Delhi, Raj Ghat, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Bhairon Marg and other key stretches to be used by dignitaries and foreign delegates who will arrive for the summit.

A few months ago, Atishi told reporters that the flyover work would be completed by the end of July. Construction work on the flyover that will connect ITO and South East Delhi via Bhairon Marg and Ring Road is expected to make the stretch signal-free. Work for the same began last year in June.
A senior PWD official cited flooding and unprecedented downpour as the chief reasons for the delay in completing the project. “Due to this, the construction materials could not reach the site. For example, construction materials come from NCR cities like Faridabad and Gurgaon, but they could not even enter the city for about 15 days due to a ban on heavy vehicles following the rain and flooding,” the official said.
Factories that manufacture concrete and construction material also shut down operations, including delivery, during monsoon, the official said, adding, “This is another reason behind the delay. But as of now, the situation has been resolved and the construction materials are coming as per schedule. However, it is very difficult to tell if the flyover would be completed before the G20 Summit.”
